Mikkel Mark Trio: A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes
This intimate recording of the Mikkel Mark Trio is a treasure in multiple ways. Mikkel Mark is one of the pillars of the Danish Jazz scene, yet remained largely unknown to outsiders for a big part of his career. This trio, with Anders Christensen on bass and Kresten Osgood on drums, started out more than 15 years ago and played lots of concerts in the Copenhagen area. This is their third release.
The album was recorded at the now legendary Copenhagen club ‘5e’, a scene hangout spot for many years. With its unique atmosphere and stylistically wide open program, 5e was the place to meet for many creative minds, but had to close down in spring of 2020.
The Mikkel Mark Trio was ‘artist in residence’ for a month in 2014, and played four concerts to passionate audiences. This recording of these concerts is a testament of the energy and family-like feeling of the place, which led Mikkel Mark to write in the liner notes: “I can clearly feel the support, enthusiasm and positive attention coming from the audience on this recording. (...) I think the record is a good documentation of the vibe and energy of 5e.”
It comes therefore with little surprise for those that know Mikkel Mark, Anders Christensen and Kresten Osgood, how much depth; how much delicate, subtle and joyful energy this recording contains. Everyone in this trio is known for their liberated, colourful playing, and here once again the sum is greater than its parts. Anders Christensen plays a heartfelt bass solo on the title track ‘A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes’, and Kresten Osgood’s drum solo on ‘Out of Nowhere’ is lively, empathic and well balanced, yet the kind interaction, comping and joyful unity is what permeates the whole album.
Mikkel Mark writes: “I think we had fun together with lots of smiles and kindness. The project has an unpretentious feeling to it and at times brings up a childlike sensitivity”.
