Lotte Anker (b. 1958) Danish saxophonist and improviser + composer.
As a child and young Lotte Anker studied classical piano but took up the saxophone and improvised music in 1980, primarily influenced through the music of John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter but also the more experimental jazzscene in Scandinavia at that time. She studied music at the Copenhagen University from 1980-84 and has a degree in composition from Rhytmic Conservatory, Copenhagen 1998.
She has studied music at the Copenhagen University from 1980-84 and participated in several workshops lead by e.g.: Joe Henderson, David Liebman, John Tchicai, Marilyn Mazur, David Murray.
As a composer she is mostly selftaught but has a degree in composition from Rhytmic Conservatory, compositionclass led by Bob Brookmeyer as well as Danish contemporary composers such as Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgren, Svend Hvidtfeldt-Nielsen. In 1988 she formed her own quartet with pianoplayer Mette Petersen:Lotte Anker/ Mette Petersen Quartet-later quintet with trumpetplayer Nils-Petter Molvær. Other Danish/Scandinavian groups/collaborations e.g.: Marilyn Mazurs Primi Band, Two Bass-Hit, Saxmachine, Jazzgroup 90, Anker,Friis,Poulsen, Art-Out, Sine Die, Ictus, Mokuto.
In the mid 90´ties she found herself playing more and more free improvised/open structured and experimental music as well as working more intensely with composition; trying to combine her main musical interests in the worlds of modern/free/impro jazz and contemporary (new) music. Still performing with a lot of Scandinavian groups she also started performing and collaborating more intensive internationally at that time.
Lotte Anker works currently as a leader of the highly acclaimed trio Anker, Taborn, Cleaver (with Craig Taborn, pno and Gerald Cleaver, dr) as well as a trio with Sylvie Courvoisier (pno) and Ikue Mori (electronics) and ongoing collaborations with Marilyn Crispell (pno). In 2010 she established the group What River Ensemble w ao Phil Minton, Garth Knox, Fred Frith, Ikue Mori, Chris Cutler, Jesper Egelund and Anna Klett She is also –since 1997- co-leader of the Danish based 12- piecegroup Copenhagen Art Ensemble. LA has played and collaborated with a long list of musicians/improvisers like a.o:
Fred Frith, Tim Berne, Marc Ducret, Herb Robertson, Miya Masaoka, Peter Brötzman, Paal Nilssen-Love, Andrew Cyrille, Marilyn Mazur, Arve Henriksen, Django Bates, Benoit Delbecq, Paul Lovens, Wilbert de Joode, Joelle Leandre, Okkyung Lee, Peter Friis-Nielsen and many others.
LA has toured and performed at major festivals, clubs/concertspaces in most of Europe, USA, Canada, Africa, Asia and the MiddleEast.
As a composer and saxophonist she has worked with musictheatre and dancetheatre eg: Kaspar Hauser w/ Jorge Holguin Dancetheatre, Transient Minds w/ Ricketts Dance Co. Roberto Zucco at The Royal Theatre and Insomnia at The Royal Playhouse, Up against the Wall at The Other Opera-all in Copenhagen. Other projects include: Esbjerg Ensemble Composer workshop, Music/Words w/ Figura Ensemble, Soundkitchen, Stavanger, Hanoi New Music Meeting 2009, Motion Picture etc.
Lotte Anker has received several workinggrants, commisions and awards: a.o. a 3-year workinggrant from the State Arts Council 1996, DJBFA compositional prize 2002, BG-Foundation Artist in Residence (New York) 2005, DA/NY Arts 2006. Danish Jazzlaunch (3-year-export grant) in 2006-8.
