Francesco Bigoni

Born in Ferrara, Italy, 1982. Mainly self-taught. My musical formation was marked by an early encounter with Steve Lacy and three editions of the summer jazz workshops in Siena (Italy).

Enrico Rava and Stefano Battaglia were my Italian mentors. I played with Enrico Rava’s Under 21 quintet between 2004 and 2005 and attended the Permanent Workshop held by Stefano Battaglia (in Siena) from 2004 to 2008. My involvement in the Workshop was followed by the birth of the Out-Vestigation quartet, with Giulio Corini and Emanuele Maniscalco, in 2007.

I experiment strategies of collective production since 2005 as a member of El Gallo Rojo ( label/collective. A number of projects are nurtured within the collective, featuring me both as sideman (Beppe Scardino Orange Room, Alfonso Santimone Laser Pigs, Zeno De Rossi Shtik, Emanuele Maniscalco From Time To Time) and co-leader (Houdini's Cage, Headless Cat).

I’m a member of Gianluca Petrella Cosmic Band, which holds an intense live activity in the best Italian and European venues (Jazzfestival Saalfelden, Bergamo Jazz, Clusone Jazz, Umbria Jazz, Crossroads - Emilia Romagna, Jazzfestival Münster, Auditorium Parco della Musica - Roma, Sounds of Music - Groningen, Berchidda Time In Jazz, Casa del Jazz - Roma, …) since 2007. In 2009 Cosmic Band released its first official album (Coming Tomorrow - Part One) and wins the Italian critics poll as “band of the year”.

I joined Francesco Diodati’s quartet, Neko, in 2009. The quartet released two records with the Italian independent label Auand Records. Since then, we have toured Italy on a regular basis and have been featured in several European venues (12 Points! - Dublin, Tremplin Jazz - Avignon).

I played with Jim Black’s Italian sextet in 2011.

I live in Copenhagen since 2009. There I got married and attended a 2-year post-graduate program at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory (having Django Bates, Nikolaj Hess and Carsten Dahl as mentors). My trio Hopscotch, with Mark Solborg and Kevin Brow, was featured at Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2010 and 2011 and released its first album on ILK.

My latest project, On Dog, puts together Hopscotch and the saxophone/clarinet trio Crisco 3 in a new band led by Solborg and myself. This quintet features some of my best friends and fellow musicians from Denmark, Italy and Luxembourg/via Berlin: Mark Solborg, Piero Bittolo Bon, Beppe Scardino, Marc Lohr. Our Italian debut (after a short residency in Massa Lombarda) was followed by a nice feature at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2012. We are currently working on our upcoming release.
